For many people, treating for fire ants is of no concern during the Winter. After all, they’re not currently active, so why worry right now? Out of sight, out of mind! The ants are currently underground, and the product that we use will prevent them from coming back up when the temperatures get warmer. Prevention is key when dealing with fire ants, as it is difficult to get rid of them once they have established their mounds.
Fire Ants, and The Damage They Can Cause
While fire ants do not necessarily harm your turf, they do occasionally feed on landscaping, which can damage the plant. They also frequently infest electrical equipment, causing damage by chewing on insulation and building their nests in and around the area. This can cause short circuits and can potentially harm anything connected to that unit. The biggest area of concern though, is the possibility of severe allergic reactions in people and family pets. Their mounds on the grass pose a threat to children and animals running through the area, unaware there is a mound nearby. Should they step on or around the mound, it is likely they will be bitten.
